STARBUCKS in Beijing

In July, a coffee shop called STARBUCKS near the old palace in Beijing disappeared. One day in January, a Chinese newscaster insisted that Chinese should make the shop close because they must keep a diversity of their culture like Japan, especially Kyoto. Then, Chinese people began to say "throw America out of Beijing!" without thinking like him, but thinking of only extreme nationalism. After all, the shop was closed, but he wasn't happy. Recently, Chinese people are often criticized that they depend on their instant ideas or emotions and have so extreme nationalism thinking. I think Chinese people should consider many kinds of things more flexible and from more points of view.

In some points, I agree with your idea, because people in the world almost cannnot live without American country. We need MacDonalds, jeans, and so on. However I also think that it is very very important thing to question the present situation. We sometimes have to have skeptical mind toward too much Americanized society. Do you mean "being flexible" as "giving up your own cultures"?

I agree with kirunji. Indeed, these days it is much more convenient because of american culture such as foods and clothes. However, I think it is very important to protect own old culture. For example, having MacDonalds in Kyoto is not good because there are many historical Japanese buildings. We shoud not have other culture where there is own valuable thing.
